Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure designed to narrow the waistline and improve the appearance of the stomach. The aging process creates changes to the abdomen in both women and men, such as decreased elasticity, excess abdominal skin and stretched abdominal muscles.

While diet and exercise form the foundation of most weight loss strategies, many patients discover that exercise alone doesn’t improve the loss of skin elasticity, the presence of stretch marks, or the separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis). With diastasis, no matter how strong the “six-pack” muscles become, a bulge will be present where the muscles are separated. Pregnancy is a common cause of abdominal muscle separation which can lead to widening of the waistline.

A tummy tuck is suitable for men and women who are in good health. During the surgery, an incision from one hip bone to the other is placed below the bikini line to remove excess skin and stretch marks, and the remaining abdominal skin is tightened. The “six-pack” muscles are tightened and secured back to their youthful, supportive position. Additionally, conservative liposuction may be used to remove excess pockets of fat. If a patient has no skin laxity or abdominal wall separation, then liposuction-alone may be performed in areas where excess fat exists. Certain patients who have excess tissue isolated to the lower abdomen may be candidates for a mini-abdominoplasty, which results in a smaller scar.

Abdominoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia as a day surgery. A typical recovery ranges from 4-6 weeks.

FAQ

Tummy tuck surgery can remove localized fat from the abdomen and excise overhanging skin. It can also repair abdominal muscles that have separated due to pregnancy or other factors, known as rectus diastasis. It restores a more youthful and fit appearance to the abdomen.

Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty include men and women who are looking to rejuvenate the abdomen by removing excess abdominal skin and fat. These cosmetic concerns may be caused by the following factors: -Weight fluctuation -Pregnancy -Aging -Genetics

Tummy tuck surgery is not a weight loss procedure and should not be performed in patients who are significantly overweight. While the surgery does remove localized fat from the abdomen, it is defined as a body contouring procedure. This means that your shape will be slimmer, affecting the fit of clothing, but the surgery will not result in significant weight loss.

There are two main types of abdominoplasty: total abdominoplasty and partial abdominoplasty (“mini-tummy tuck”). The traditional total abdominoplasty is a powerful technique that aims to rejuvenate the entire abdominal area. During the procedure, liposuction of the upper abdomen is performed and the rectus (abdominal) muscles are brought back to the midline to narrow the waistline. The umbilicus is raised and reconstructed and the entire abdominal skin is re-draped. A mini-abdominoplasty is a great procedure for patients who carry their excess tissue mainly below the belly button. A mini abdominoplasty utilizes a shorter scar and can be combined with liposuction to thin out the remaining abdominal tissue. Contact us to learn more.

Abdominoplasty typically begins with liposuction to reduce localized fat deposits. Then, a hip-to-hip incision is made across the lower abdomen, passing above the pubic area. This incision allows the abdominal apron to be raised, so the surgeon can access deeper tissues. Once the abdominal apron is lifted the surgeon can tighten separated abdominal muscles with stitches. Excess skin is excised, fat deposits are removed, and then the tissues are reapproximated using absorbable sutures. The belly button is brought out through a new opening at its new raised position.

The overall recovery process from tummy tuck surgery usually lasts six to eight weeks. For the first week you will experience moderate discomfort and a feeling of tightness in your abdomen. You will be required to wear a post-surgical compression garment for the first four weeks. This helps control swelling and fluid retention in the weeks following your surgery. It also helps your abdomen take on its newly sculpted shape. Most patients return to work and regular daily activities within three to four weeks. Exercise and vigorous physical activity will need to be avoided for eight weeks to allow the repaired muscles to heal.
